Can I Use the AppleTV with downloaded movies?

I know the AppleTV plays movies and TV shows and stuff that you buy from iTunes but what about DVDs that I download from other places or rip from my own discs? Does it work with all the different codecs and stuff, or will I have to keep using my PC for that?
