Well, let's see...I don't remember the actual birthday because I'm sure I was quite drunk at the time -- legally, for the first time. I was in my last year at university and drinking quite a bit in those days (and the next several years to come). What had I accomplished? Well, I hadn't written a book yet but did have a short story published in a major national magazine. Had just received my Reserve commission as a 2nd Lt. I had been on the Dean's List at Boston U. in my freshman and sophome years but that went down the drain as my drinking picked up. Not much else. Frankly, being in your 20s sucks. Life doesn't get real good until you reach 31. From there on you've reached your peak and can coast on it for a couple of decades anyway.

I graduated from the Naval Academy and had just started flight training at Pensacola Fla.
