I think that means to have an OK day, but not a better day than they are having. It is very competitive.

I think it is a habit kind of like saying good morning how are you and not waiting around to hear the reply.

Do you know what I think?

I think that most people use this expression as a way to brush you off. They want to get rid of you, but at the same time they want it to be a sugar coated "brush-off".

How often do you hear, "Have a good night"? The only times I've heard this is on the 11pm to 7am shift in the hospital.

New Haven- I think that you are right, in a sense, but I take a more optimistic outlook.

I think that when people want or need to end a conversation, many don't know quite what to say without appearing rude. "Have a great day", is one way of concluding an interaction on a positive note.

Oh. Well, smooches work well too!

Seriously, I was wishing that Roger would have a superior day. Even better than mine! I'm concerned he doesn't get to backpack anymore.

Thanks Pifka. It worked. One of the best days this year and I hope, but don't really expect to find time to write it up in the 'pets' section.
