I am planning on remodeling our very tiny galley kitchen and adjoining family room by expanding out about 8 feet. The problem is, neither one of us has an eye for what goes together. We both know what we like/don't like when we see it, but just aren't creative enough to coordinate things on our own.
So, are we better off getting an interior designer's perspective first, or hiring an architect? Are architects trained in any way to help people decide on things like what countertop color looks best with a particular cabinetry color? On the flip side, would an interior designer be aware of things like plumbing & electrical requirements/codes? This is the home we plan on staying in for at least the next 15 years, until our children finish school, so we'd like to make it very much "ours".
Can anyone help?
@monixdenix,
I think I've heard of one or more software programs that will kind of let you put it together and see how it looks. If you can track one of them down, it would probably save a bundle before going into a paid consultation. Probably the larger retail suppliers of kitchen fixtures would be a good place to start.
Sorry I can't come up with specifics, but I bet someone here can help before the day is over.
@monixdenix,
Usually you would start with an Interior Designer. Just make sure it's someone with a good reputation and some references.
Remodeling to the extent that you are describing rarely takes an architect. Most contractors can figure out the construction requirements easily. But contractors aren't good at aesthetics, so that's why you should start with an Interior Designer.
@monixdenix,
Yes, interior designers are well-versed in plumbing and electrical requirements/codes. Once they have developed a plan that you like, they will determine if an architect is needed.
@monixdenix,
Hi there! I think you need both of them. Architect and Interior Designer will help you remodel your kitchen. They are two individuals with different ideas and you need them in order to come up with the design that you want.
I think you should get an idea from architectures and work from interior designers.
Both plays an important role in setting up your home but in remodeling your home you should get more from interior designer.
