Hi All,

Am undecided on 42d. Subjected to lashings of attention. w??p?ed.
whipped - wrapped?. Whipped fits with lashings but not attention. Wrapped (rapt) fits with attention but there is no "sounds like" in the clue. Can someone please explain this one to me? I'm stumped.

Many thanks. Shirlz.

@shirlz,
Maybe "lashings" refers to bindings, as in "lashed to the mast"?

@shirlz,
Hi shirlz

Three of us Cryptic nuts have completed the puzzle and we all came up with "whipped", which refers to lashings.
41a = arrow
51a = exploit
58a = eon
60a = preached.
This gives you the letters w??p?ed. The only words you can make from that are these:
1. whapped
2. whipped
3. whopped
4. whupped
5. wimpled
6. wrapped
So we've gone for whipped as the most appropriate one. See what you think.

@Dutchy,
Hi Dutchy,

As always you come to my rescue. Thanks heaps. I had whipped in but only in pencil as I couldn't rationalise it. All my other answers are the same as yours.

Thanks again.
Shirlz/canoe3154 Long story. After 10 days of hair tearing I was suffering withdrawal symptoms so bit the bullet and re registered with a new name as no variant of canoe with different numbers would be accepted.

@Shaunnas Dad,
Thanks too to you Shaunnas Dad.
I hadn't thought of the word in that context.
