Does this normally happen or is it an embarrassment issue?

Hagel, 8 other GOP senators to pass on RNC convention.

The Hill reports Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) is “skipping the GOP convention.” Along with Hagel, the following conservative senators are also taking a pass: Pat Roberts (R-KS), Ted Stevens (R-AK), Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), Gordon Smith (R-OR), Susan Collins (R-ME), Larry Craig (R-ID), Wayne Allard (R-CO), and John Sununu (R-NH). Roger Wicker (R-MS) is undecided about whether he will attend.

@JTT,
*shrugs* Don't know for sure either way. I know Collins is in a tight race to keep her seat and staying home to campaign while she can.

I heard something on NPR last night from one of the Dem. Senators who said he wasn't going to the DNC Convention and wasn't endorsing anyone for Pres. When the commentator asked why his response was "I never do." ( I don't recall who it was. They were discussing the Blue Dog Dems vs. Progressives angle on the election.)

I just looke dat USA Today and their reporting says "Sens. Ted Stevens of Alaska, Gordon Smith of Oregon, Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine all face tough re-election campaigns. Two others, Wayne Allard of Colorado and Larry Craig of Idaho, are retiring."
