I think, for my birthday, I am taking myself there..

From where we live, according to mapquest, and once I look at the map I can tweek the drive a bit.. but.. it is only 7 hours and 36 minutes worth of driving.

I can do that with my eyes closed.

i was wondering if anyone here has been there?
It is in Arkansas..

is there any other place like this in america?

I have tried googling 'crystal mining. crystal mining america. crystal mining north america"
and I get nothing

Other key word ideas?
Other places maybe not on Google?

I tried "Recreational mining crystals" on Google and it came up with a bunch of hits.

I've seen shows on the public diamond mines ("Crater of Diamonds" in AR also) and public turquoise mines in New Mexico but hadn't realized that regular ol' folks mine for crystals for fun. (Ya learn sumthin' new around here every day!)

Almost every state in the union has several quartz crystal mines. Arkansa is famous for its giant clear quartz crystal groupings on a limestone matrix. Missouri has pretty much the same stuff. Check out the "tri sate mining district rock and mineral locations" I dont know whether those are the exact google groupings of words but Im aware of several sites in the Joplin and tri-state districts.
Arkansa has a real honest to god kimberlite pipe or two, where diamonds can be found. (Diamonds are gonna be next year "beany babies" they are so overvalued now and the new CAnadian fields coming on line will make diamonds as common as "cubic zirconia"

One of the best quartz crystal sites in the US is the Rose quartz sites north of Ab NM ( I wont tell dys or hell be out there with a dozer), and other Rose quartz crystal sites are in Northern MAine, SOuthern Cal, and in North CArolina.
NEat doubly twinned quartz crystals (called Herkimer Diamonds) are found in Herkimer county NY.

We are a huge country knee deep in crystals. You wont make any money finding em. The best way to mine crystals is to buy a tract of land where some are found, and mine tourists with one of those "hunt and keep crystal mines". These are-to me, a tourist scam. Find a decent geology department at a major U and ask the mineralogy professors wheres some good sites. They are mostly rockhounds with PhD's anyway. All mineralogists I know are just big kids with fancy lab toys and a job that lets em go out in the field hunting for crystals. Embarrassed

HAve fun, .

Quote:
Rock Hunting - The Granite Highlands of Llano and Burnet Counties cover about three thousand square miles. Located in Llano County, Enchanted Rock [ photo above] is the second largest grainte dome in the U.S. About one square mile in area, the main dome is, like the tip of an iceburg, the exposed portion of the Enchanted Rock Batholith which is over one hundred square miles in area and is the hard core around which the land mass of Texas formed. Over one billion years old, this is some of the oldest rock on earth.

This area is also known as the Central Mineral Region of Texas. The abundance and diversity of minerals in this area are unequaled in the state. Rock hunters often search below the dam for rocks and minerals such as quartz, granite, gneiss, flint, schist, feldspar and limestone.

Did anyone catch the show on tv about the thirteen crystal skulls? I believe it was on The History Channel or Discovery, whatever, but I, unfortunately, missed it.

A friend of mine was telling me about the show and it sounded rather intriguing. I'm assuming this is where the idea for the new Indiana Jones movie came from, but I wasn't familiar with the tale.

Apparently there are thirteen crystal skulls placed in various locations around the world, six of which have been found. Four of them belong to private collectors, one is in a museum, and the other belongs to some sort of traveling exhibit, or some such thing.

The skulls have been studied by scientists and there is no explanation as to how they were made, no evidence anywhere on the skulls of tool-working.

I didn't really hear much about the show from my friend, she just mentioned a few of the highlights during a quick conversation the other night, and I was going to dig into it a little more, but, until I saw the title of this thread, the incident had slipped from my memory.

Perhaps I will look into it now.

Ahhh.. One of the few stories that makes me want to connect to cable, or even rabit ears to watch tv.

I have heard of those before.

I have also heard, and it may be just people chatter, that the ones that do exist .. or at least.. have been found , and are in control of museums and such are deliberately kept apart

Supposedly some where some one said that putting them all together is supposed to be creating some kind of super natural force..

or some such thing like that.

I dont know. But I would sure love to get my hands on one.

Actually farmer man.. that is exactly the type of dig spot I am looking at going.

With the option of having a large hole created by back hoe for only myself and whom ever else I bring to dig through . Smile

It is the idea of the digging that sounds fun.
I just wish I could find at least one other person to go. It would help to have someone to talk to while Im working..
