A hostel sounds better to me, and then renting a car the days you want to move to another area.

Matt Gross, who writes the Frugal Traveler for the New York Times, did a cross country trip in an old Volvo, pitching a tent or staying at cheap places. He bought the cheapo car just for the trip. Had various car troubles, but made it through the trip, and, if I remember right, sold it in Portland or Seattle. His series of articles on that was about a year ago...

Thanks! I'll look that up.

I don't know how to get around car insurance - ha, wish I did.

There's also some online worldwide traveler association, of which I forget the name. Dadpad may have mentioned it, or another a2ker. Basically, you stay on people's sofas, and offer others the same at your place. I think Matt Gross used that on some of his travels too, but not sure.

Rent-Free Housing
Freegans believe that housing is a RIGHT, not a privilege. Just as freegans consider it an atrocity for people to starve while food is thrown away, we are also outraged that people literally freeze to death on the streets while landlords and cities keep buildings boarded up and vacant because they can't turn a profit on making them available as housing.

Squatters are people who occupy and rehabilitate abandoned, decrepit buildings. Squatters believe that real human needs are more important than abstract notions of private property, and that those who hold deed to buildings but won't allow people to live in them, even in places where housing is vitally needed, don't deserve to own those buildings. In addition to living areas, squatters often convert abandoned buildings into community centers with programs including art activities for children, environmental education, meetings of community organizations, and more.

I really think you should go Freegan - here is a website dedicated to it:

Is part-time work (about 5 hours/day) a possibility?

Many families will be happy to provide free room and board in luxury accomodations in exchange for looking after kids (driving them around and helping with homework) or in exchange for taking dogs to run in the park twice a day for a couple of hours early am and late pm.

The latter case is in fact mine, with 2 Siberian Huskies, but I'm in Manhattan, not Florida, so can't make an offer. Surely some similar cases exist in FLA!

Linkat - illegal occupation of the property of another is a criminal offense, especially since inevitably accumulating litter constitutes a fire hazard. You should explain to Kicky you meant it as a joke - he doesn't want to get free room and board in a state prison!

Are you kidding?? What parent in their right mind would allow kicky to watch their kids? I probably wouldn't let him take care of my plants - no offense intended kicky.

So don't get a car. There are bicycles, mopeds, golf carts, etc... What you need depends on how you approach the overall idea.

I actually met Kicky and liked him a lot - perhaps you only know him online, Linkat?

Would be glad to entrust him with children, plants, household contents, cars - though perhaps not an airplane Smile

Interesting. It looks like it was written back in the seventies though. Thanks though. I'm sure it has some universal truths and ideas that I can still use.

I don't know about part-time work. Maybe. I'm still in the daydreaming stages here, so I have no real plan. All ideas are being considered at this time.

Thanks!

Holy crap, here ya go Kicky:

"Rent a nice 30'plus camper all hooked up waiting for you for only 400.00 monthly."

"Includes all utilities and free laundry. Campground consists of 47 acres of nice wooded land just minutes from beaches and town."

http://pensacola.craigslist.org/vac/626376718.html

$400/month and all you need to do is show up and provide your own food.

I like Pensacola...beaches are a little crowded...but you do get to see the Blue Angels practice and that is pretty awesome. Of course...you are there on the Redneck Riviera....
