I know some one who used to bring his dog to doggy daycare so the doggy wouldn't be alone during the day. He could have "friends" to play with.

The article claims concern is shown by the dog owners because they defer the responsibility of dog ownership to hirelings, I am not convinced of that logic.

It could just as easily be claimed that the dog owners want the trendiness / status of dog ownership without the hassles.

my entry "got away" before i could add my own comments .

when we were in buenos aires two years ago we were rather surprised at the many professional dogwalkers .
and it is a well paid profession ! the walkers - who have to pass an examination and have to be licensed ! - are paid about the same as a teacher !!!
we were told that most people live in apartments but still like to have a dog or even two - and usually large ones . since they wanted to be sure that their dogs were as well looked after as their kids , that seemed to be the only choice .
the dogs all seemed well behaved and obeyed the walkers commands . around noon many of the dogs and their handlers met in the central park for a siesta under the shade trees . there was plenty of sniffing but no fighting .
in the two days we were there we did not see a single dog running loose !
we were quite impressed !

I read in the newspaper this morning that dog walkers in the Boston area are making $16-20/hour.

Figure that many of these "walkers" walk about 5 dogs at a time, that'd be $80-100/hr total or if you do 2 walks/dog each day, that'd be $160-200/day.
Or...for 7 days/week:$1120-1400/week or $4480-$5600/month.

Not bad for a job that doesn't even require a high school diploma. Laughing

It is unlikely they work 7 days a week - most work 5 days a week, but if they can get 5 dogs at a time and twice a day - not too shabby. Although it probably doesn't include benefits so with taking 2 weeks vacation a year a person would make $40 - $50k a year not bad although they would have to cover their own health costs.

I find it telling that most people insist on solo-driving their own vehicle (often needlessly expensive over-sized SUV's, vans and trucks) as opposed to carpooling.

However many of these same people appear to have little qualms about relinquishing their kids to the potential moral uncertainties of daycare.

it certainly looked to us as if those dog walkers had university degrees - no kidding .
those dog owners are VERY particular and wouldn't just hire anybody to look after their pooches .
as i said : they have to pass an examination and obtain a license to walk the dogs ! those walkers were all fit young people , quite well dressed for their jobs !

I'll bet they also have to have a graduate degree in dog walking too. Laughing

It's really good for a dog to participate in a pack so dog pack walking makes a lot of sense.

Hmmm....

I walk my dog every day, I would love him to have a pack, maybe I can start up my own little neighborhood business!

Another growing business involving dogs is the dog poop business.
Owners don't want to clean their yards after their dog poops all over.

So they hire the poop patrol. Rolling Eyes

My favorite is "doodycalls". I saw a truck drive by with the advertisement. You can actually buy a doody calls franchise.
