How to comfort a temporary exam loser?

Reply Tue 25 Dec, 2007 10:18 pm
Hi, guys
I'm writing a New Year card to a friend who has lost two exams in the past half year.

He cared those exams much!

Mad

I want to get him cheerful and make further effort on his study.

What would I say?

I badly need some verses or stories from the Bible, cause I know he has been to the church often.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, bluestblue,

For starters, tell him his sole worth is not measured by his exam results! I'll bet there are many other very good reasons why you value him as a friend! Tell him what they are. Very Happy

Secondly, if you Googled, I'm certain you could find plenty of examples of well known people people who weren't exactly brilliant academics, but were very successful (& happy!) in life, anyway!

Thank you Msolga! But things are a bit complicated. Mad Because he HAS TO, he MUST pass the exam IELTS.
He excels in subjects like biochemistry. But IELTS is a must for him to get a further step in his study and career.
He has been studying English for a long time, and I can see his progress. What I want is to encourage him to stick on his study and in the end, with all the efforts, he'll pass it and have the opportunity to do things he really likes.

Any verses from the Bible to encourage him to stick on what he has been doing?

I'm sorry, bluestblue, but I'm not a religious person* so I can't help with Bible verses. (*Not in the formal sense, anyway.)

IELTS = ?

Something to do with English language studies I figure. In which country?

Try using some simple words in Google to find some verses you may like.

I would try -

Bible strength
Bible verse strong/strength
Bible endurance passage
Bible passage of endurance ( or strength)

Just play around with those word combinations in Google or Yahoo search and you may find what you are looking for Smile

IELTS: International English Language Testing System
It is held all over the world.

So in which country is your son studying & sitting for this exam?
Is it an ESL ("English as a second language" in Australia) situation?

My son?! Exclamation
No, it's my friend Very Happy
We're in China. He plans to go on further study in Australia.
In several months he's going to study in a language school in Australia first, then he has to pass the English test held by that school in stead of IELTS, before doing any study in his major. I sincerely wish him good luck.

Yes, it's something like that. You know, before you pursue any academic degree, you have to prove to the university your English level. IELTS transcript is a proof.

Oh sorry, bluestblue! Your friend, of course! Sorry for my confusion. I'd just been reading about another A2Ker's son's ear operation ...! Embarrassed My mistake.

I wish your friend good luck, too.

To be honest, bluestblue, this aspect of your friend's situation worries me. The expectation that he MUST pass, that failure is not acceptable:

Some times, you know, despite their very best efforts, students do not pass exams. I am not saying that this is what I think might happen to your friend (How would I know?), but I worry about the pressure he must feel under to pass this exam.

Maybe Job (patience)?
Maybe Baalam's Ass (if God can make a donkey talk....)?

What you said is reasonable.
Yes, he'll feel under the pressure. In fact, he has always been feeling that way. But I think, before he gives up, he must have tried the VERY BEST he can, or else he'll feel sorry for himself in the future.

Thank you Bobert.
I've finished writing that card by writing things like "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. "

It seems not expressive. But I think he'll get what I mean.

Besides giving him a card, is there any way you could help him study?

By phone call? Internet?

Sometimes, all it takes is a good study partner for someone to catch on to a lesson and have it work for them.

Thanks for your reminder. U'r very kind! Smile

Today, along with that card, I've sent him some reading and listening materials I found most helpful, and a well organized study method I found efficient, and some chocolate to sweeten his mood.

Basically, he's a net friend of mine. Smile

Here are some biblical quotes about strength (PS That's a very nice thing you're doing): http://www.bibleinsong.com/Promises/Spiritual_blessings/Strength/Strength.htm

Here's one of my favorites: Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
--Proverbs 8:14

I bet your friend knows more than he thinks he does.

For an internet friend, you could sign in with him on a messanger program and try to have a full conversation in only English.

That too is a way to study and practice the language even if you are only talking about fun things!
