Okay...obviously this would be something I'm not very familiar with .... so I've come to where the experts are.
Being on vacation a few weeks ago, I spent a lot of time swimming. Go swimming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, NOW I've got this utterly ridiculous tan line. It's not visible to anyone else, but very visible to me.
IT'S 3 WEEKS LATER !!!!
Is that normal? I don't know a damn thing about tans (having never needed one hahaha i crack me up) but I didn't think they last for 3 weeks. I really want to know if there's a way to get rid of it?
Anything? And laying on my back porch nudikins is NOT an option lol.
ETA: i do not like being 1/2 brown and 1/2 darker brown. it's not a slick combination.
I usually have tan lines all summer. Then again, when I'm not tan, I resemble Liquid Paper.
Can you get a darker version of a self-tanner? Jergens makes a lotion with self-tanner in it but I only use the super-fair stuff so I can't comment on how dark it can get.

Do not try a self-tanner at this stage. It won't be a match either and will probably give you an orangy tint which, IMO, would be even more odd-looking than your tan lines.
You may have those lines for months. Black folk have a tendency to hold onto color, you know. So embrace them as a reminder of your vacation. Hope it was fun.

I was thinking A.D.D.
Anyway, take a long hot bath and afterwards rub your tanned areas with a pumice stone. After this amount of time your tan layer of skin will just come off. Follow up with a good skin lotion.
I have olive-toned skin and there's no getting rid of a tan with a pumice stone once it takes hold. I have permanent tan lines. They're lightest in June or so, just before I start being out in the sun again, but they're there.
And yes I use sunscreen.
Ony, you'll be a scrubbing fool trying the pumice stone. I sincerely advise you against that. If you want to try that technique, use a formulated body scrubber of some kind, not a stone. But I doubt it's effectiveness for you anyway.
You need to spend time in the sun naked.
Gee, I didn't know there was such a thing as permanent tan lines. I'm a landscaper, so I get really goofy tan lines. I've always used the pumice to remove the tan after my season and I'm back to uniform skin color. I am fairly white by most standards, so I guess you have to cross off my suggestion in this case.
Fascinating..... a pumice stone? For real? That might be useful someday.

That will only darken everything. Not eradicate the lines.
GW, I'm surprised that a pumice stone works for you like that. I'm gonna take a wild guess..are you a fairskinned redhead?

Fair to light olive skin, green eyes, currently auburn red head, but that has more to do with my hair dresser than my genes (born a dark brunette). Love the pumice, I just have to soak first and not rub too hard.

I have a very tourettes-ish way of speaking also. If you only knew me
Re: I have TAN LINES...can you get rid of them?
I don't think I'd want to endure the hurt of rubbing pumice stone. I might end up being an example of that old phrase among black people of "rubbing the black off" myself.
I suppose the best thing for me to do at this point is wait it out...which I guess I can do. It's just very annoying.
I once tried to rub off Holi (an Indian festival where you basically get colored head-to-toe in every color of the spectrum) colors with a pumice stone. Some of these colors are semi-permanent and only come off after several baths. I had mile-long scabs in every place I used the pumice. Including my face!! Shoulda just let the color be.

Hadn't heard that in a long while.
