Ava Gardner was married to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra and closely co-mingled with Ernest Hemingway. She was in about 50 films (I really liked The Night of the Iguana. She musta been one really strange lady.

I admit to never having an interest in her, but I did like Richard Burton...

I don't mean to be rude to Mickey Rooney but I could never understand why such a beautiful woman would marry a midget

What the newbie Lovejoy said. Some relationships are beyond understanding.

Eoe, tell us more about her being a stone cold freak. I'm used to being disillusioned.

He's not a midget to begin with. Ava was usually heavily under the influence of alcohol. I used to see her at the Mogambo and Ciro's in the 50's, which was right below the house (so I could walk down there and walk back, although back was uphill all the way).

Hey Diane, let's let LW tell us about her. Bet he knows some of the tales. And can verify them.

Looking for pics of the Mogambo as well.

Ya know those places were e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e and I was a college student although I did have friends who could afford to take me out!

I don't know many tales for sure about Mickey or Ava and Mickey is still alive, so I would likely refrain as I am against here-say or gossip about celebrities even if I do know the real story. I leave that up to the National Enquirer and The Globe (one person comes to mind on these threads that must not get through the check-out stand without a copy of The Globe!)

Mickey is 5' 2" and some fraction and wore lifts which made him almost 5' 5"
That's nothing new and far from being aggressive which one might find with short guys, he was (and still is, I understand) a fun person to be around. I think that's what Ava liked. Sinatra wasn't a giant, either, at 5' 7". Ave was 5'6", so Mickey didn't look terribly short beside her. In film, if you notice when he's beside Judy Garland at 5'5", he doesn't look shorter.

Whoa! I forgot that Mickey Rooney is still alive. Sinatra's gone, Artie Shaw's gone, and who's the last man standing, huh? Laughing

Mickey married and remarried so many times, eight to be exact -- Artie Shaw a total of eight wives (of Henry VIII? Very Happy ) Frank had only four. He's the one that should be still alive!

Very Happy

When I said lightwizard that I didnt mean to be rude to Mr Rooney I meant it, but it has to look comical like for example Tom Cruise (5' 7) and Nicole Kidman (5'11) plus standard ladies high heels (6'2)

Tom wore elevators and Kidman generally long dresses with short heels or even flats covertly hidden under the skirt. She's shown on various bios at 5' 10" to 10-1/2" It's a dead giveaway in nearly every photo of them together. Also notice Kidman's hairstyle.

It may or may not be insulting to Mickey in referring to him as a midget but I think the midgets might also correct you.

Didn't know about Tom and the elevators but it was noticeable after awhile that when they appeared together, she made an effort (flat hair, flat or low-heeled pumps) to minimize the difference in their heights.

She's a stunner, isn't she?

And speaking of Stallone, how about Bridget Neillson, the amazon that sucker-punched him some years back.

"Strike Up the Band" is my favorite of the Garland/Rooney outings with a spectacular finale by Busby Berkeley.
