I received a message on my Yahoo account that gave me a new password. The message indicated that someone may be pretending to be me. I noticed that Yahoo has been acting rather odd, and I am more than a little concerned. I used the new password that was sent me, and it worked, but I'm still at loss to explain the problem. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

I'm a little vague on what you're experiencing there, Letty, but that sounds VERY suspicious. If I were you, I'd go into my Yahoo! profile IMMEDIATELY and create a NEW password, one not likely to be figured out. Something which is not a word, is 7 to 10 characters long, mixes upper and lower case letters, and includes a couple numbers and/or special characters (ie: paSSw_97rD), is pretty secure. If you use Yahoo! Wallet, change your Secure Password as well, using a different combination.
DO IT NOW!!!

Oh, and don't write it on post-it affixed to your monitor

Someone may have tried to log in using the same Yahoo user name you use and they were told that the username already exists. They may have just been confused and clicked on the Icon telling Yahoo they forgot their password. When you do that Yahoo resets your password and sends the new one to the e-mail addy you told it to use when you signed up.

Someone may very well be trying to break into your account but it is also possible it could be totally innocent. A good password should protect it for the time being. If it continues send an e-mail to Yahoo support.

You're prolly right about it being benign, fishin'. Someone with a username similar to Letty's is probably very pissed that they have not received their reset password "Even though I clicked on 'I forgot my password' and did everything I was supposed to' Rolling Eyes ... still, 'net security is tenuous at best ... better safe than sorry is my attitude.

Helloooooooo!

I did this. It was to send a new password to your account, because Phoenix told me you were having trouble signing in.

Next time you are having trouble signing in, please send a note directly to Support and we'll avoid this confusion. Thank you.

Well, that clears THAT up ... I thought Letty was referring to her Yahoo! account, not A2K. That's my bad ... sorry, Letty. I just get all sorts of paranoid about passwords and other security issues.

Thanks, Fishin, timber, Jes, Phoenix and all.

Just glad that it's cleared up myself. Wow! Doesn't take much to create paranoia in our society as it is right now. Rolling Eyes

We must all be on the watch for all the fake communication we receive asking for personal information. DON'T GIVE IT OVER THE INTERNET. They're trying to get your real name, address, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, social security number, and all the information needed to take your assets. BE WARNED. c.i.

C.I. not to worry. I don't use my credit card on line, nor do I bank on line, and when I receive an unsubscribe message to stuff, I don't do that either, I just block sender. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work. Somebody, somewhere thinks I am a man, and keeps sending me all this girly stuff. Good grief!

ah, c'mon Letty. What's wrong with wanting to meet women? I get tons of those invites at my hotmail account. I don't know why, but they just ignore my yahoo account.

Hi Letty:

Weird. I had trouble logging in although it accepted my password. It's just that the hourglass was there for 5 minutes as if the program was busy. I had to log off and on to clear it. Also it told me I had been on before at 10:00 am which isn't true. There were 2 logs since then which doesn't sound feasible. I tried to post and was kicked out while posting. Undeterred here I am again.

I'm a little apprehensive since reading of identity theft in yesterdays business section of the Boston Herald and then receiving a call from my son in law for the same reason. So I decided to get some info and found it on Internet scams:

http://www.ccmostwanted.com/scams.htm

Also some good info on site just activated by federal trade commission on 7/22/2003:

http://www.ftc.gov/

I think we have entered the twilight zone.

Hey, Bob. It is odd about identity theft, because my niece who is a lawyer, sent me an e-mail, concerning the same dangers. My Godchild had her identity stolen while she was visiting me here in Florida. She thinks that it might have been a car rental agency, and she only found out about it when the thief tried to wire money to some Caribbean island. Shocked Thanks for the links. I'll check em out later. That's why I freak out when I think someone is not who they claim to be. All part of the same problem as far as I'm concerned.
