I found this site in a Google search and I already have read a lot of very good information on this subject. But I was wondering if anyone has some item specific information and advice for me.

Let me first say that I am still in the stage where I’m just trying to gather as much info as I can.

I want to import r/c toys. I have found a supplier and have already ordered a sample (still waiting for it). My question is about shipping for a big purchase, well big for me. If everything goes well with the sample I will place an order of about 500 pieces or so to start out; less than half a container. I don’t know much of the shipping terms yet but they ship "FOB Shenzhen". From what I understand this means that they are in charge of the merchandise until it leaves the Shenzhen port? Then I take care of everything else?

I have read a lot about customs broker and what have you and am beginning to understand this. But one thing I have just started to look at is FedEx. I understand t will be much more expensive then the other but if they take care of everything and all I have to do is pay them and they get it to my warehouse I am willing to pay the extra for my first shipment. What do you think?

I would like to know the step by step process of getting a shipment from china; and is there anyway to know if I will be charged taxes and what not before I make the order?

I am located in Virginia and my business would be half wholesale and half retail (both online).

ANY advice would be much appreciated. All this stuff is so complicated to me right now.

IT IS EASY TO DEAL WITH YOUR CARGO
HI JAY,

You are right ,if your cargo leaved the port from Shenzhen,China you have to take care everything ,such as the port charge, customs clearance and warehouse in and out fee.

You can hire a broker to help you cope with all the things and you pay the money to them because usually the forwarding company only accept the broker's check at the first time.

Advice about importing from China
I am a student of GuangDong University of Foreign Study.(Web site : http://english.gdufs.edu.cn).I serviced in Canton fair for 3days.and did a part time job in a trade company for half a year.I am willing to help you in the purchasing business in China.

here are some advice for you.

There are three way for a foreigner to import from China .

1 Someone purchase from trading companies. Tell them what you need ,they will find the local manufacturers who can supply it and then purchase form them and export to you. But the price is very high; the trading company will add more than30% of the total value of the goods, as their profit. This is the worst way.

2 Purchasing from the manufacturers which has the export license. It's a better way, but only some of large manufacturers have export license, and can export by themselves. is it a good idea? Not exactly, you don't need to worry about the quality of their products, at the mean time, the price is very high, Why? They can be searched in the internet easily and the have enough customers .They receive many inquiries from Alibaba ( www.alibaba.com )everyday. They don't need to do business in a low profit. Of course, some small manufacturers have export license can accept a low profit, but they can be hardly searched in the internet. Any this way is better than the first way, also, Canton Fair is a good way to purchase from manufacturers directly but the price is really high.

3 Cooperate with the export company. Purchase from the local manufacturers or local market by yourself or your representative then export the goods by the export company, of course pay them service charge (about 330USD/container). Many foreigner like this way, some of them find a representative to do the purchasing work in China. When they have enough business, they set up a c office. Paying export service charge is totally different from being earn a high profit by the trading company. That help to cut the cost down in a large percentage .if you wish, I am willing to be you representative in China. Help you to find the local resources and search the detail information of products and price. Also help to find the authentic export company. Make sure that you can import what you want in the best quality and the best price. (My payment will be a small percentage of the total value of the goods)

So, why not let me have a try, just tell me what you want, I will find it from the local manufacturers and give you the information, to see if it is the best price and best quality. If you are not interst in this, we can also be friends in the further, anyway, i am not a businessman, just a student.

If you have any question, please don't fell hesitate to ask me.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,
Tony Qin
