Catholic Church Reverses Teaching on Limbo

By NICOLE WINFIELD
AP

VATICAN CITY (April 20) - Pope Benedict XVI has reversed centuries of traditional Roman Catholic teaching on limbo, approving a Vatican report released Friday that says there were "serious" grounds to hope that children who die without being baptized can go to heaven.

Such a bunch of construct, one can only wonder at the embrace of this mountain.

As far as I noticed, this only refers to the limbus puerorum.

The limbus patrum might be still my place

What utter nonsense. People are expected to change a life long held belief, just because a head of a church said so. Starts to get you to thinking as to whether the entire structure of a church is simply a mass of conjectures, politics, and what a particular person in power tends to favor. Laughing

I had thought they got rid of the whole concept years ago. You don't hear much about the whole limbo/purgatory thing any more.

Things don't suit them anymore so they just change the rules.

Yes, I think you've described the Church structure pretty well, Phoenix.

That might certainly be so.

But since to Catholic belief the Pope as the Successor of Saint Peter is the Vicar of Christ at least fro Catholics it's not an utter nonsense at all.

Besides that, "limbo" had never been defined as official Church dogma - it was a "children belief" as we learnt in religion classes. (Which I could later verify when studying history at university  )

I wonder did he have to consult with God or did he decide to make the change by himself? I guess he felt the need to make a Cult -ural change. Pun intended.

I agree. But I think we need to raise the bar.
