Back on page 4 there's a list of Alt + numbers tricks to make symbols appear. I'm trying to put a copyright symbol in a Word (2007) document and it isn't working. Holding Alt while entering 0165 results in a "save document" box opening as soon as I hit the 1.

Any suggestions?

have you tried a simple copy/paste of the symbol itself?

If you don't want to learn the shortcuts for each of those, you can always just use a feature of Windows computers called "Character Map" (All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map) where you can select symbols and copy them to your clipboard.

Further to what Robert wrote... if you use Character Map often, you can create a shortcut on your desktop or taskbar.

I can't duplicate that on my Word 2007.

I can get "save as..." by pressing and releasing ALT, then pressing 1.

Do you press ALT, type the numbers, then release ALT?

You could use Word to assign a macro to insert the symbol. "Alt-C" for example.

Of course Word 2007 comes preconfigured to auto-correct "(c)" to " ©", which I had to fix because I normally want (c) to just be the letter "c" in parenthesis, not what Microsoft thinks I ought to want it to be.

Tico's got your easy fix "(c)" automatically changes in word.

If they had them then, they probably would have taught them. Thankfully, phonetic spelling never caught on.
