When in doubt, go for the downlights in 12 volt.

Quartz halogen globes last for ages, and the light is better than flouro.

Flouros are changing, they are finding better ways of making them be closer to daylight (5000k) color and you get about four times the lumens per watt.

I started switching over 5 or 6 years ago. The problem now is that the older twirlies are breaking off at the stem when we try to switch them out. Hitting the circuit breaker to remove a broken twirly is turning into quite a pain in the Evil or Very Mad

Most annoyingly, I think we're going to have to take the whole kitchen ceiling fan down to get the broken twirly stubs out. grrrrrrr

I've wondered if they're changing, JoeNation, glad to hear it as I haven't liked the fluoro bulbs, color wise or lumen wise, in the past, and that's putting it mildly.

Eyep (on both -- haven't liked them, good that they're changing).

One thing that surprised me was that the latest champions were both deaf. I just realized something though -- they don't lipread. They're both quite culturally Deaf, and use only ASL (which is "bigger" and much easier to see). In one of the earlier conversations about this, someone (Tico? Martybarker?) explained that fluoros do something tricky, shadow-wise, and convey less depth.

I've been there. You get a pair of long-nose pliers, and drive one leg outside and one inside the bulb seat. Get the grip and twist.

Believe me when I say that you will have to do this anyway, whether you take the light fitting down from the ceiling or not.

Yeah, frack the flouros. Quartz halogen is the way to go.

Nice white light. And the dimmer switch still works.
