THE ALPINE MEGA-TUNNEL
Elevator to the Underworld

By Samiha Shafy
The world's longest railway tunnel, currently being built through the Swiss Alps, is impressive enough in its own right. But the construction project's most spectacular feature will be a train station in the heart of the mountain, from where tourists will shoot up to the surface in a high-speed elevator.

The Gotthard tunnel will greatly cut travel times between Zürich and Milan.

From the "Porta Alpina", passengers will have easy access to the ski slopes.

The elevator will carry tourists 800 meters to the surface.

Incredible project, but knowing the Swiss, it will either pay out or they wouldn't be building it.

After I went through the rigamarole of posting this, and expressing my own doubt about gettin' on that train or elevator, I started to think about matters like the Holland Tunnel in New York and the Chunnel under the English Channel, and decided that actually being in the train or the train station would likely not actually feel scary....
