Edgar, this sounds like a PSU or possibly an overheating problem.
It sounded like you got some sense out of it for a few moments when it was cold and then it shut down.
Then after a while playing with it it refused to boot at all.
Need a bit more information.
Does it beep when you power on ?
Does the hard drive spin up ?
Do all the fans spin around OK ?
Does the light on the front come on ?

The only response I get out of it is the green light at the start button sometimes comes on. Beyond that, nothing at all.

Good guess is that it's a dead power supply if you don't hear the fans spinning

My word, edgar. You and I have the same pc, an emachine and Windows XP. UhOh.

I had my old custom made pc fixed and now have a back up just in case.

I'm posting from my wife's emachine. It's a year older than mine.

Hope, thinks turn good, Edgar.

(I've been posting from my wife's maschine a couple of times during the last two weeks as well: my computer went on unannounced strike a couple of times - the new one arries this weekend. [But I won't install it until she's away a couple of days in mid-January ... I was told by Mrs. Walter  ])

It does sound like the PSU is fried.
If they happen to be the same type, you could swap the PSU with the one from your Wife's PC to see if it boots properly.
Either that or get a new PSU from a retailer. They only run a few bucks so you're not going to be out of pocket even if it's not the PSU.
Actually if it's not the PSU then you could just take it back to the shop and get your money back.
