computer crashed

My posting will be sporadic for a while. About four hours ago, my computer shut down at its own initiative as I was using it and now refuses to restart. I am as ignorant as a babe in these things. Will get an expert to tell me if it's worth saving. Mrs edgarblythe is off some place with her sister. I am borrowing her machine for a bit.

Good luck, Edgar. I know how frustrating that can be. I felt a bit LOST when I was cut off from my A2K buddies. At least your wife has a computer.

edgar, Do you have a computer repair shop that charges about $49 to check it out for you? Otherwise, I'm as ignorant about computers as most people. Maybe timber can help you. Good luck.

Don't know yet, CI. Got to check, but it will be at least Tuesday before I can reasonably expect to get it looked at.

It's an emachine w2646, on windows xp. I started it with some difficulty this morning. Had to press the on butten a few times to get it to turn on. I did a test online for my job, posted on a2k a bit, then shut it down for a while. Same problem starting later. As windows started up, and I clicked on the internet icon, the computer shut down, completely. I tried to restart it for a while, as the last two pages of my current book were not saved. Once, the light behind the start button came on, but nothing else happened. The antivirus expired a few weeks ago, and I haven't found the money to resubscribe as yet.

It's two or three years old, I think. Forgot, exactly.

My guess is it is the power supply. Those usually run about $30 to $50.

if you can get it started again try this

click start > open my computer> right click on your hard drive icon (probably cSmile> select properties> select tools> under error checking select check now> select both options available and select start

at this point you will likely get a message that informs you the disk check will start the next time you restart your computer, exit out of that message and then restart your computer, upon restart your computer will go through 5 diagnostic checks some fairly quick a couple are rather long

you could also try using system restore

It's there because you typed c : ) > (without the spaces I put in)

The : ) is a smiley code. Smile

You referred to drive C and wrote:
Code:c:)

The message board software interpreted that as the code for smiley which is colon close paren.

Oh, it knew. It is just that it doesn't care. Computers have a mind of their own.
