"Clever people & grocers ..."

The other day a co-worker responded to my efforts at making sense of a very chaotic workplace with these words: "You think too much." (Suggesting I should question & analyse less, just go with the flow ... )

Her words reminded me of Zorba's, to the overly-analytical Englishman in the film, Zorba The Greek:

"You think too much. That is your trouble ... Clever people & grocers, they weigh everything ...." (sorry forgotten the rest, but you get the gist ...)

Which got me thinking. Laughing
Could constantly thinking about things actually make things harder, by complicating the issue/s?
Is it better to just get on with things, ACT (intuitively, spontaneously), rather than analysing, questioning, evaluating before acting?
Can too much thinking actually be bad for you? Rolling Eyes
AND if so, how does a dyed-in the-wool muller over of things change their ways?

Definitely over analyzing things can make everything worse! First of all, you spend all of your time thinking about it, then after a decision is made, you spend all of your time wondering if you did the right thing!

C'mon! Get over it!

Some cases yes, others no . . . if yer playin' baseball, and you don't react instinctively, you could well get a bouncing hard ball moving at speeds of about 80 miles per hour, right in the head . . . this tends to discourage unnecessary analysis in the ball player. If you're about to invest $25,000--you better just take your time, and think about.

Misti

I'm actually not upset in the slightest about my co-worker's words. Very Happy
Was more interested in how some of us are thinkers/mullers over of things & others are more spontaneous .... Was just wondering what it was that made people respond to the same stimulus in such different ways.
There really isn't anything to "get over".

Yes, indeed! Depends on the circumstances entirely.

I like to decide one way and see how I feel about it the next morning. And decide the other and see how I feel about that the next day, and then decide the other and see...

Well, heh, sometimes, for big decisions I do it that way, test it out and see how the temporary decision feels.

I agree with Setanta in saying that it depends on the circumstances. Some things need to thought through, while other things may not be of importance. In matters of finance and children for example, you need to think about things on a regular basis.

Olga, the answer to your question depends on what are your professional duties. If you deal with strategies of the company you work in, then thinking is exactly what are you paid for. But if you perform some routine technical job, at some moments thoughtfulness may be excessive since it may affect productivity or lead to unexpected results embarrassing the bosses...

Hello, Montana!

Yep, a good, thorough going-over for the big questions & less heavy pondering for the small, that are less important. Otherwise life could become very ponderous indeed! Very Happy

Ponderous . . . hmmmm . . . we'd be clucking and laying eggs all the time--it doesn't sound like much fun.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter, steissd. The situation at work is really more of a "Why is it so?-one .... trying to figure out WHY things are the way they are & also how to make this abysmally unworkable workplace more tolerable .... If you understand what I'm saying. Laughing
But come to think of it, this is only a short-term contract. I'll be there only till September. It's probably useless me trying to figure out solutions to a mess I haven't created, nor will I be part of the solution.
So ... Maybe I should just make the best of it & be happy it's not forever, yes? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
I will just have to curb my Why Is It So?-tendencies. Not easy!

Miss Olga, Eve was formerly Visitor, and got Jespah to change her handle. Do you remember Visitor?
