No, my daughter didn't speak French before. She finished high school with a diploma in French (went to Quebec on a 3 month exchange in grade 10) and is completely bilingual. She loves it - she's like me, and has a facility with languages.
Learning another language is also the only sure way a child is going to get any grammar education these days. Here, anyway.
