Not a lot of focus on Women's tennis here but Serena is going for history next week.

I was worried for a while, because she had to pull out of a tournament shortly after Wimbledon due to a minor injury,
but Cincinnati definitely showed us she has healed up nice.

@ossobuco,

I was just getting ready to cite the same story! Man, the pressure is on her now! Selling out seats for the final before the first round begins!

@snood,
Ana Ivanovic and Sloane Stevens are both gone already. Both of those are hard hitters who could have given Serena a challenge in the top half of the draw.

Just a quick aside, Venus Williams graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration ahead of the US Open.

@snood,
Yes, but enough of the comebacks already. She's taking years off of my life!

I think it's a combination of other players really coming out at her strong in the first set, and Serena needing to warm up to a match. But I know - she's given me a couple more gray hairs.

@engineer,
I somewhat know about sjogren's disease, having a lab related to to a rheumatology clinic for some years. I am big happy to see Venus do well.

I don't know recent stuff about it, that was in the seventies. But, still.

Epic match for Nadal. Time is creeping up on him
Quote:
NEW YORK – Fabio Fognini stood at the baseline and looked up. It was nearly 1:30a.m. on a relatively cool night in New York. The stadium around him was in shock.

He, too, couldn't seem to believe what he had just done. The 28-year-old Italian knocked fan-favorite Rafael Nadal out of the U.S. Open, winning a five-setter in which Nadal had taken the first two sets.

Midway through the third set, it looked like Nadal would walk away with the easy win. Instead, the two-time champion is going home on the wrong side of 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, upset by the No. 32 seed.

@engineer,
Also, I'm proud of how she is handling this whole "history making run" thing. When she said she was just concentrating on one match at a time, and that if she lost, to trust that it wouldn't be the end of her world or anything - I believed her. She seems to have really grown some great 'dealing with the press and public' chops. Good on her.

@snood,
It really is amazing. My greatest fear/hope is that she and Azarenka meet in the final. Despite being ranked 20, Azarenka is the second best woman out there right now. Serena has beat her three times this year and each was a death match. Part of me wants that dream final, part wants Serena to crush some nobody just so I can sleep easy.

The US making a decent showing so far. Several women still in the draw, Isner and ... Donald Young! Two comebacks from two sets down, one from one set down, all while playing doubles and mixed also.
