@Walter Hinteler,
Oh, thanks! I saw 0-2, 4-6, 4-6 but the 4-6s were in pale type..

one site said it was a semi final, which didn't make sense; two said it would be a final match.

Nothing in the Guardian, my go-to place for tennis news, at least when I looked.

Part of my confusion, though, was my ignorance that 2-0 could win the match.

@ossobuco,
I am following the NY Times blog on the US open, and then Sports news. My favorite players are Federer and Nadal.
Who are your favorites?

@victorleo,
Are you really allowed to like both Federer and Nadal? To read the message boards, you would think their fan bases are polar opposites.

Roger Federer secured the 1,000th victory of his career as he beat Milos Raonic to win the Brisbane International title today.

@ossobuco,
On the women's side, the second round match between Azarenka and Wozniacki would be a great final. Definitely the must watch round two match. Sloan Stevens continues to self destruct.

I've always been a Fed fan, because I prefer Jedi-like shot-making ability to athleticism, and I have never really liked Nadal, who was always in my hero's way. Over time, though, I've come to respect Rafa. I really think he's the greatest player in history and would have more major titles than Fed, if not for injuries.

@Kolyo,
I am a great fan of Nadal and of Federer - both wonderful to watch. Different in so many ways, but hard to pick a favourite.

@Kolyo,
But injuries are part of the game. Federer's Jedi like abilities mean he can use skill over extreme athleticism to win points extending his endurance and reducing injuries. I think Nadal's injuries are a direct result of how he plays. Absolutely breathtaking physicality but at a cost.

Federer is out in the third round!! What an upset, career win for Seppi. This is the sad downside of aging for both Fed and Serena. It's not that you can't hang with the very best, it is just that once in a while you come out flat and lose to someone you should mop the floor with.

Second week is shaping up!

All the key men's seeds are in place except for Federer. Nick Kyrgios is the unseeded young gun replacing Fed in the top eight. On the women's side, Venus Williams and Madison Keys will be a great contrast in age and the match between Sharapova and Bouchard will be the most watched match of the round, either men or women.
