Seems to me that if Cream is mentioned, it should be for "Sunshine of Your Love", no?

Oh, HELLO?

I know more about The Faces, Long John, Julie Driscoll, than you do!

So don't cum over all whispering Bob Harris

DUH!

Are we discussing riffs? Or the credibility of Rod Stewart?

The riff, I believe, had nothing to do with Long John or Julie Driscoll, but Ron Wood.

Are you saying that Ronnie Wood doesn't merit a mention?

You were the one alluding to The Faces lack of credulity - and not specifically the riff, nes pas?

Perhaps you have spent too much time in France, Lord E?

And forgotten your ENGLISH!

You cheese eating ex-pat you...

There was a lot of excellent work that Eric Clapton, Jimmy Paige and Jeff Beck did with John Mayall, and then in the Yardbirds--For Your Love was very "advanced" in terms of the popular music of the day.

I'd go along with you on that vote for Sunshine of Your Love. Small wonder that people were spray-painting "Eric Clapton is God" on walls in London in the 1960s.

My list
I realize this Iis slightly off-topic ... but if I had to think of one favorite ruff I couldn't .. sooo I selected all of my favorite riffs...LOL

However, if you held a gun to my head it would be Clapton in "Leyla" for it's pure RAW emotion, virtuosity and for what the hell was going on in his life and with what was going on musically at that time.

This list creation has been done quite a bit, but what the heck ... here goes:

Narrowing down a favorite guitar piece here for me would be akin to my picking one of my children as a favorite to be sacrificed. I love all of these and would take them all to a desert island with me if I had the choice.

Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower/Voodoo Chile/When 6 Was 9/Little Wing/Foxy Lady

Jeff Beck - Shapes of Things, I Aint Superstitious, Beck's Bolero, 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers, Superstition, Freeway Jam, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat

Clapton/Yardbirds/Cream - For Your Love, I'm Not Talking, Smokestack Lightning, I'm a Man, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, I Feel Free, Spoonful, Rollin and Tumblin, I'm So Glad, Toad, Sunshine of Your Love, Born Under a Bad Sign, Leyla, Crossroads, White Room, Sitting on Top of the World,
Badge, Sea of Joy, Had to Cry Today, Can't Find My Way Home, I Looked Away, Key To The Highway, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad,

Stevie Ray Vaughan - The Sky is Crying, Pride and Joy, Little Wing, Chitlins Con Carne

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta love, You Shook Me, Immigrant Song, Black Dog

Pink Floyd - Money, DSOTM, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Comfortably Numb

Carlos Santana - Jingo, Soul Sacrifice, Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman, Everybody's Everything, No One to Depend On, Smooth

Duane Allman and Allman Brothers band: In Memory of Elizabeth Reid, Statesboro Blues, Ramblin Man,

George Harrison - My Sweet Lord, Isn't it a Pity, Wah Wah, If Not for You, Behind That Locked Door, While My Guitar Gently Weeps Something, Here Comes the Sun, Beware Of Darkness

Steely Dan - FM, Aja, Josie, Kid Charlemagne (Larry Carlton's guitar), Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Time Out Of Mind

Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Down to the Water Line, So Far Away, Brother in Arms

Ry Cooder -- "Sister Morphine" on R.Stone Sticky Fingers album, "Chicken Skin Music", Paris Texas (title song)

Lowell George Little Feat. (too numerous to mention) Waiting for Columbus, Hoy Hoy, Willing, Fatman in the bathtub,

If you held a gun to my head and asked me what 3 songs define FAV-o-rite Rock & Roll Guitar Riff:

Eric Clapton Layla

Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Chile

Lowell George/Little Feat "Dixie Chicken"

Criteria for me are:

Virtuoso playing

Songs That Make Me Grab for My Air Guitar (insufferable and incurable white-boy-itis disease)

Well known songs (tracks that aren't found in some obscure album only known by musicians)

Cuts That SILL Can Be Played Repeatedly (no matter how much overplaying by FM radio jocks) Memorability... stands the test of time. Unfortunately, this crtiteria is what pushed most Allman brothers songs off consideration in my top 3 list...broadcast radio drubbed them into the ground. along with a lot of Rolling Stones.

Real Emotional Impact ..,.not just the emotion of "wow what a guitarist" (a la Alvin Lee...sorry TYA fans)
