I need a sangria recipe

Reply Thu 24 Aug, 2006 09:12 pm
Got a family party/cookout this weekend, and apparently because I like to drink, my mother thinks I can whip up Sangria like my name is Pancho.

I plan on making it tomorrow night to let the fruit soak, and google produces about 2 billion recipes. So, wondering who has something good to save me from reading 100 different versions and figuring out which sounds best.

I did a search here, and one I found entailed boiling sugar, and putting water in it. So...NO water in my booze, and I'm not cooking anything. Don't mind a bunch of ingredients though.

Well I'm off the computer until late tomorrow, so thanks in advance.

I'll check with my sister - I know she makes it.

Forget my sister, this recipe is straight from Portugal:

4 liters of bad red wine (cheap).
1 bottle white wine
4 apples
3 oranges
rind of 2 lemons
2 sticks cinnamon
4-5 TBs sugar

Sprite/7-up

Chop all fruit, small if people will ingest it, large if they'll want to pick it out (the portuguese says small for ingesting). Mix all ingredients (except soda) and 'fridgerate overnight. Taste the concotion the next day and add sprite to taste (1/2 to 1 liter).

De nada. Tell me how it goes over (if you use it).

The recipe sounds good, but please don't take cheap wine,
you'll regret it big time later on.

Sounds good. Gotta figure out if I want to make 4 bottles worth though, maybe I'll do half.

I agree with CJane, forget bad red wine. Don't put in the best, but your basic tasty red wine is a good idea.
Maybe a nice rioja from Spain...
Dys and Diane have one they like from Costco, I've tried it, it's fine, and not horrendously pricey. Think Dys may have posted the name here.

Probably get Rioja to keep with the Spanish theme, and it's usually $10-15 a bottle or so.

And in Spain they use orange juice instead of sprite. Smile

Portuguese says that making good sangria from bad wine is a national challenge - to me it sounded like a bad fraternity test.

I lied, I think they get it at Sunflower, but never mind...

Simpler than sangria but it'll get you just as plowed--

2 bottles cheap champagne
1/2 container pink lemonade concentrate
Slices of strawberry, lime and orange (or any other fruit that strikes your fancy, I suppose)

Mix well in a large container, serve cold.

It came out really, really good. I made it to the exact recipe you gave, except used a little less 7UP, and added a little brandy. Good stuff.

Yea, it was good. It was my grandfather's birthday. My grandparents sat at the quiet table, and I listened to my aunt and girlfriend tell me I should purposely plant an ex-lax laced bottle of booze in my kitchen to catch the mooch roomate.

I think just keeping the booze in my own living room is fine, but that's not a bad idea there.
