They now read my meter from their truck in the middle of the street. I fully expect the technology will continue to evolve to the point where the meters can be read by remote computer, thus making meter readers obsolete.

Have you read Friedman's "The World is Flat"? Everything that can be done digitally will be. It is happening all around us.

House cleaning, or running errands for older folks. One guy runs an
errand service here in town, and he's quite busy picking up dry cleaning,
shopping for groceries, going to the pharmacy, drive old ladies to the
hairdresser, and so on....

That's already being done in some areas, but is costly to convert.

What is being forgotten, in a haste to make meter readers obsolete, is that a pair of physical eyes are being removed from going door to door.

The result is that there will be less meter tampering /energy diversions discovered.

I never said it would be a better system, Reyn. But it will be cheaper in the long run.
