BMW 3 Series - Planning on Buying One

Well, not ME precisely, but a relative of mine. Does someone around here has (or had) a 323 or 320 of late 90's early 2000's? I'm interested in finding out if the mainteneance is really expensive, or if the engine quality is - as supposed - high above par.

A Lexus is more reliable, it's a well known fact that the BMW 3 series are good (great?) cars but do not equal the service and repair record of Toyota / Lexus in terms of overall costs and reliability.
