Things to do on a road trip... Advice?

Reply Thu 23 Mar, 2006 03:14 pm
I am going on my first road trip in June.... I was wondering if anyone had anything that they do to pass the time? It is a 20 hour ride and I am driving down with my boyfriend.

What can we do to keep ourselves amused and awake? We are driving straight through, taking shifts driving!

Oof. Have good driving music. I think that's job one, as you'll be heading in and out of radio coverage.

After that, I gotta run, will think re this.

I have never done this, but many people play books on discs.

Talk.

I mean, what can you really do in a car when one of you is the driver?

Make a cd or two with songs you both like to sing to and then sing away.

Eat as little as you can manage so you don't get gas (serious here....you will be mightly uncomfortable if you eat too much and get bloated and gassy)

Good music.

And talk.

Music and/or books on CD are both great. Non- messy snacks help too. Also, a nice padded seat cover of some variety.

One more thing, on long drives guys need to take their wallet out of their back pocket-- otherwise, it's like resting one cheek on a big lumpy stone after a few hours.

Aside from those things mentionedÂ…

One thought on entertainment, especially if you are driving through an area that has lots of stuff to talk about. Get a travel guide or information about the areas that you are driving through. As you go through each region talk about something specific in it of some interest. For example, this hick town is known for the largest ball of string.

I also like to look at a map as I go along - just to note where I am.

You can also look at the people in the other cars. The person not driving can describe them. Then make up stories about where they are going, what their life is like - the more soap opera like the more entertaining. Try to outdo one another.

Well, before you go, realize that traveling together is a major stress on
relationships. MAJOR. You're going to get on each other's nerves. Be ready.

Lots of time to tell those "first time I ever" stories.

keep in mind that sex, in a car, along the highways and byways can be very erotic.

Good point.

There isn't anywhere to go if you get in an argument.

Do be prepared.

Be careful of the upholstery.

As tempting as it may be for the non-driver to nap, both of you stay awake -- someone sleeping in the passenger seat makes it way harder for the driver to stay awake.

Is there any chance of staying at a hotel overnight somewhere on the way? It usually works best to make it about 2/3rds of the way through, rather than halfway. You always have less tolerance for the drive on the second leg, and knowing it's half the distance of what you've already covered is encouraging. (Like, drive 14 hours the first day, sleep, relax, then do the final 6 hours the next day.)

Get drunk, make fun of the driver, throw up on his carpet, pee out the window.

Oh, sorry. Flashback to a COLLEGE roadtrip....

Can't do this anymore, but when my son was small, we used to count the Volkswagen Bugs on the road.

Credence Clearwater Revival. I recommend Chronicle 1 and 2.

Best travelling music ever.

Copy this picture and paste it on the inside of your back window with the image facing the front of the car....

Now, whoever is driving can look in the rear view mirror and go "What the hell is that?!!"

The passenger can turn around and go, "It's chasing us! Hit the gas! Faster! Faster!"

It's an exciting game that I often play with my fellow travelers. We all laugh and really get caught up in the excitement.

Tico, I am of the opinion that "Graveyard Train" is not only CCR's greatest song, but possibly one of the top songs of all time.

Do you concur?

Well, it is a great song, but I can't say that I do. "Walk On The Water" is probably my favorite CCR song.
