I know this is a sweeping statement/question but can you give me a clue as to penalties for being drunk in charge of a car in the US? Thank you.

Zero days to one year in jail in most states as long as no one was injured and no accident occured. It goes up from there.

FYI for New York City:

I worked for a bit in the NYC Civil Enforcement Unit, and there are additional penalties if you get caught with a DUI in the metro region.

You could (temporarily) lose your car. You get pulled over, blow above a .08, and they arrest you and take your vehicle. It gets impounded and to get it back, you have to first go through a program that assesses your risk with alcohol. This could lead to the following options:

1. You're not a risk, and after you get assessed, they warn you and give you your car back (after you pay for the impound holding fees);

2. You're a risk and they require you to complete a program before you can get your car back (and you still have to pay the costs of holding your car, which is a certain amount of $ per day, with the cap at $500...but I'm not sure, this was last year).

Either way, be extra careful if you're tipsy and driving in the NYC metro region.

(of course, you should double check everything you read on the internet, including this post... )Click this link for more information on it if you are interested)
