Godfather 4, and a digression

Is anyone looking forward to the planned fourth installment of the Godfather movies? Did they not learn from Godfather III?

As a digression, I just watched 'Gummo' and I am seriously freaked out...did anyone else see this flick, and what did you think?

As much as I loved the first two, I couldn't bring myself to watch the third installment. The clips kept me away.

I haven't heard of a fourth. Is Pacino signed? Do you know much about it?

Haven't heard of Gummo, either. I think I need to get out more.
Can you give a thumbnail of why it freaked you?

It would prove interesting if Pacino appeared in Godfather IV since he died an old man in Pt. III. Flashbacks? Where would the story pick up?
I've always felt that Coppola's casting of his daughter in Pt. III was the biggest mistake of all with that film but since her character was eliminated and probably will not appear again, I'd give Pt. IV a looksee. Without a doubt.

This is posted twice and if you want it repaired, let me know.

"Godfather IV?" Copolla like so many of the great directors should take a hint from the great painters -- subject matter. Get on with it.

Hmm, sorry if I posted twice Embarrassed Our comp has been a bit wonky lately. Rumour is, Leonardo di Caprio has been tapped to play the young Sonny....eewww....that is probably going to be worse than Ben Affleck as Daredevil....

Gummo is a strange flick about white trash kids living in a small town that never got over a tornado, even years later....they run about, wreaking havoc...first scene opens with a kid wearing a bunny costume drowning a cat....that kinda sets the scene Shocked

Leonardo Di Caprio??? Unless he has been spending his time taking acting lessons, I don't think that he will be able to pull it off.

I don't know why some producers don't quit while they are ahead

Glad to hear Pacino died in III. Think Godfather should be laid to rest with him.

I still like watching I and II on occasion. So brilliant and beautiful.

Bob DeNiro was the most gorgeous man on film as young Vito, IMO.

Gummo sounds horrid. I can't watch kitty drownings. I suffer with nightmares sometimes about violence like this, especially when kids are the perps.

I thought Leo was brilliant as the retarded kid in "What's eating Gilbert Grape." But, alot of people, like a few here, think he's awful. Could anyone point to the nuances that I must be missing with Leo? Did he have a particular role that really sucked?

Sofia, maybe it is just me, but the Oscars creepily seem to favour actors who play retards, and actresses who take their clothes off, for nominations. Personally, I thought Leo was very good in Gilbert Grape, but what was up with Sean Penn's I am Sam? Yucky manipulative trite trash... I also thought that Halle Berry was not so great in Monsters Ball (but she got nekked), and I felt Sissy Spacek should have received the award for her brilliant performance in In the Bedroom. As for Bobby D, 'Are you talkin to me?' Heh heh...yeah, Gummo was pretty horrid....don't think I would give it a second view. At least you know why I was so freaked out.

I think that the current Godfather IV rumors are based on the fact that Random House had a competition and hired a guy to write a sequel to the original book.

Article about writer hired for Godfather sequel

But those Leo rumors are OLD. And Coppola has always denied that he would make a sequel. Of course, everyone has bills to pay, so you never know...

Coppola would diminish the trilogy by tacking on a fourth part. Mario Puzo wrote a great book which made a great movie with a dead horse in it. This should be a the hint. The third time wasn't that much of a charm and a fourth time would be redundant. The success of "The Sopranos" may be putting these thoughts in their head but I'm inclined to believe that this is a rumor.

Part III was bad enough. I think Coppola in his heart of hearts regrets having made it.

Gotta disagree, cavfancier. I finally saw both "Monsters Ball" and "In the Bedroom" and I think both Sissy Spacek (as always) and Halle Berry gave wonderfully performances. The type of woman who seems born to lose has got to be a difficult character to understand and realistically portray and my hat's off to Halle. She pulled it off and deserves her Oscar.

Sofia, you said it! De Niro as young Vito was indeed quite beautiful. He never got credit for being a handsome man and I'll bet he's never appeared on anyone's "most sexiest" list but back in the day, DeNiro had the profile of a Greek god.

my legit reason would be the bad acting of Sofia Coppola, it covers little new territory and Vincent isn't developed enough to play the roll he plays as 1 of the characters in main focus. Robert Duvall needed to be in the film he really did, plus I seen so many obvious lil slip ups it ruined it for me. The transition from godfather to godfather II was great but I wasn't feeling it for II-III. I really dont care if I see the next 1.

I had forgotten about this thread, and this oh-so-pleasant person with this as their single post. Has anyone actually heard anything more about a Godfather 4 recently?

Nothing on IMDb Pro about anything in pre-production or production. Check with the Boxoffice and In Production thread which I update from IMDb Pro (consequently, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard).

Just checked the full list -- nine pages and no mention of a "Godfather IV." Maybe it's like the old line, "I was descended from a very long line my mother once foolishly listened to."

Also tried an advance search with no results.

Maybe it was just a rumour, or aborted before they went too far.
