two bodies are on the ground and they are dead. clothes are all around them and there are two matches left in the match packet unused. the bodies are not burned. the hint given is of an air balloon. the question is what happened?

The Jumped out of a hot air balloon, and the matches was the way they chose who jumped...

The hot air ballon was going down since the fire went out (because hot air balloons obviously stay up with HOT AIR). They tried to relight the balloon with the matches and they also took off their clothes to try and lessen the weight carried by the balloon. So of couse their efforts still didnt save them from crashing and dieing. I think the riddle just doesn't tell you that the balloon is laying nearby.
They were attempting to light the balloon, and asphixiated on the fumes before they could get it lit. Since it doesn't specify they were naked, they most likely removed their shirts to try to cover their mouths and noses, which would have no effect on the gas.
