I am teaching myself how to use batch files and create them. I was wondering how to have the batch file open a file such as a bitmap image. I've tried START but that doesn't seem to work for some reason

Which Windows version are you using? Do you have a default program to open the file? Start should work. i.e.
start c:\pics\clown.bmp
