I am sorry that you have been taken in by the lovely Pentacle Queen's lie. In her defense, she only did it to protect my identity. But since I feel bad about the situation, I'll let you in on the secret. She is actually married to me, David Lee Roth.

(Also, she's quite a tiger in the bedroom, but don't tell her I told you that. She's shy about that stuff.)

metaphor
Pentacle Queen: I agree that metaphor can have very powerful emotional impact in songs. Metaphor is not so much about describing things accurately as using one thing to describe another, like this:

'China' - by Tori Amos. Uses China to describe emotional barriers (the Great Wall), as well as china (as in crockery), which can appear whole, yet contain many cracks, like cracks in a relationship.

'Idiot Wind' - by Bob Dylan. Puts two unrelated ideas together to describe unintelligent conversation - the 'wind' is the air expelled during speech.

'Fever' - (?) Equates physical attraction with hot flushes!

Hmm, I wasn't thinking so much about those kind of songs tbh.
I started this thread ages ago.
I think those type of songs are a bit to wordy, I like my songs to be concise.
I was talking about the words being concise and represeting what they mean well, rather than using a similie.

Don't forget the myriad of metaphors in the songs of my husband, Prince.

Well yes, because he was so in love with me, he wouldn't let me go, you see.
But I had to be strong and move onwards and upwards.
I am now married to Johnny Depp.

chiming in very late as usual, there must be a zillion songs that compare love or loved ones to sunshine; You are the sunshine of my life by Stevie Wonder is a fine example.

then there's the lovely Circle Game by Joni Mitchell:

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

A simplistic use of metaphor

Rolling Stones Brand New Car Lyrics
Songwriters: N/A
Send "Brand New Car" Ringtone to your Cell
I got a brand new car
And I like to drive real hard
I got a brand new car
And I'm feeling good so far

Take her on the highway for a little spin
I want to see the kind of shape she's in
And I got a brand new star
Jack her up baby, go on, open the hood
I want to check if her oil smells good
Mmmm...smells like caviar

Give her some stick
Push her too far
Right to the brink

Hear the motor running
Yeah, she's right in sink
Tell me if she's thirsty
Would she like a drink
And I'm stopping at this bar

Slinky like a panther
You can hear her purr
Touch her on the seat
Go on, feel the fur
And I got a brand new star

Feel the juice
Foot to the floor
Take some abuse

I got a brand new car
And I drive her in the dark
And I got a brand new car
I think I'll stop and park

Yankee Doodle is a metaphor for something: I think macaroni is a red herring.
