"I COULD care less" or "I COULDN'T care less" Which is it?

I always say "I couldn't care less," because...well, because that makes sense, dammit!

It pisses me off when people say "I could care less." What, is that supposed to be sarcastic? Which do you say?

If you said, "I could care less", it means you actually care a little.

If you said "I couldn't care less", it means you can't care any less than you do now.

That's alright. I really couldn't care less about that poll.

I agree with Soz!!! Why do so many damned people say "could"?

Oh. I thought "I could care less" was what all Americans said?

Wow! It annoys the heck out of me, cos it makes no sense, unless said with intense irony.

I have only ever heard it from Americans.

Cool that you don't all say it!

Same reason that they say that something "peaks" their interest.

Or "if worse comes to worse".

Or throw in "quotes" just for "emphasis."

Or a zillion other things.

In other words, your fifth option but applied to the universe.

(I seem to be a tad grumpy today.)

I know it's couldn't, but I'm sure I've said could. I pick up on the speech patterns of those around me too quickly and often incorporate them into my own speech.

But kicky, the real topic here is why aren't you a writer.

What do you mean? I AM a writer. Look, I just wrote something right there. And there. And...anyway, writing doesn't pay. There's the short answer.
