When I ran Spybot S&D this afternoon one of the "problem" findings was this:

Windows Security Centre. Antivirus Override

Question

Can anyone please explain what this means? (Is Windows overriding Spybot & why?)

Should I delete it or leave it?

And could this have had any impact on why internet access on my computer has been so sluggish recently?

Thanks in advance,
Olga

That's Spybot telling you that Windows Security Center is set not to check your antivirus for current update status. No biggie, really, if you are conscientious about updating your antivirus.
