Gardening manicure aids

I wear gardening gloves, but even so by the end of the day my fingernails are cruddy--and they don't seem to scrub clean.

Solution from the morning newspaper: Use a "whitening" toothpaste. The mild bleaching action works on nails as well as teeth.
