Can anyone tell me what the largest city in the world is by land not population.
I say it's London, but I have been otherwise been told it is Mexico City.

Can someone put me right.

From what I can gather London covers 625 sq miles (1620 sq km) and Mexico City covers 598 sq miles (1,550 sq km) which would make London larger than Mexico City.

I'm have no idea if that makes London the largest world-wide in area though.

Well, a quick web search didn't turn up anything about land area--and this does not sufficiently interest me to spend hours digging it up. Interestingly, if one types "world's largest city" in a google search window, the first result is at 2004 thread here.

Largest City by Land Area - Mount Isa

From: http://www.walkabout.com.au/locations/QLDMountIsa.shtml
Located 1829 km from Brisbane, 883 km from Townsville and 356 m above sea-level, Mount Isa proudly claims to be the largest city in the world; a fact born out by its accreditation in the Guinness Book of Records. The argument is that the city extends for 40 977 sq. km, and that the road from Mount Isa to Camooweal, a distance of 189 km, is the longest city road in the world

it is not davao
Yes, Davao is the biggest region in the world by its political division, but that doesn´t mean that is the biggest city, its population exceeds only the million inhabitants, and its metropolitan area doesn´t expand to 2,443.61 square kilometers

The largest city by land not population

I would have to agree with Mexico City being the largest city by land and not population.

Best Regards,
Tressie Scott

re:Worlds Largest City by land mass
why don't use google earth to have a glance at some height?

if u can locate the the city at a certain height but ther others, u can't , i guess that show the first one is bigger.

what u ya think?

pure personal, not scientific at all.

World's smallest city. Fürstenau is located about 40 km south of Chur, in the southeastern canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.

Due to global warming, most of Alaska will melt in the not-too-distant future, so I count it out of the contest.

Who measures cities by area rather than population? That is a meaningless statistic. What makes a place a city is the people. You could, theoratically, hhave the world's largest city with a populations in the double digits. Would a 5,000 sq. km area with a population of 23 be counted as a city?
