Mr. Noddy has been insisting that W. Mark Felt immediate and only superior in the F.B.I. was J. Edgar Hoover.

My recollections are that Mr. Hoover was out of the picture at that time. Perhaps he had retired, perhaps he died in harness paranoid to the end.

Can anyone substantiate memories with fact? Who was #1? Whatever happened to J. Edgar Hoover?

Hoover had died.

Gray was his superior, I believe.

Just a sec while I grab the pertinent parts from the Vanity Fair article...

by none other than FeltÂ’s new boss, L. Patrick Gray. (Gray, the acting F.B.I. director, had taken over after J. Edgar HooverÂ’s death, six weeks before the break-in.)

Thanks, Sozobe--both for the useful facts and for the speed.

I like the notion that JEH was churning in his grave before the Eternal Memorial Wreaths had time to weather.

By the by, J. Edgar Hoover is another patient who has been retroactively diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
