I live in a wooded area near Boston, and wonder if the sound I hear at night is an owl. It's "woooo woooo woooo" and occurs at short regular intervals. I can't find my bird book, so if is is (as I suspect) an owl, I can't identify the kind. Any ideas?

IIf you hear it only at night, it is probably an owl. You can't really identify what kind of owl just by the sound, you'd have to catch a glimpse of it. If you hear that sound during daylight hours, too, it could well be a mourning dove.

Is it an owl?
Must be an owl, because it's definitely not a mourning dove. I can recognize mourning doves - one of the few that I know. I'm pleased that it's probably an owl - I find them fascinating Very Happy

The owl call typically used in movie sound fx, etc., is typically the Great Horned Owl. It has a deep hoot-like call of three or four syllables. Another common owl is the barred owl; its call is typically 8 or more syllables and sounds like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you-u-u-u" (I learned that in 4-H camp out in the fields of Ohio)
