Aside from everything else anybody could say about marijuana, and this is totally from word of mouth but I've heard it enough times, enough places, enough serious people believe it that I regard it as true, the original motive for banning marijuana appears to have involved Dupont and Weyerhauser wanting to eliminate hemp as a source of competition for their tree and chemical business for making paper.
that and hemp cloth verus synth cloth, the oil from the seeds, etc..

I have heard that scientists have found a pot substitute made from -- SARIN GAS!!! Personally, I would prefer the weed.
Tremendously interesting article in the NYer recently on marijuana growing in my old neck of the woods in California. I say tremendously interesting since I learned a lot about the whole growers and dispensaries economy.
