Let's face it; California has great micro-breweries and wines.

I'm not sure how much Thomas has seen of Northern California, but I'm willing to give him a private tour when comes out our way.

Osso -- we'll have to check it out the next time I'm in Albuquerque. Wonder when that will be ... <grin>

CI -- As soon as I seriously start looking for a job, visits to Silicon Valley are a sure thing. I'm looking forward to the tour!

If that should occur, Ms. Buttinsky would pipe up with opinions to facilitate confusion.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!

I finally settled on my favorite mass-produced easily obtainable inexpensive beer....it is

Whitbread Pale Ale

I first had it in the pubs of Wales in the sixties but it took me 4o years to realize it is my favorite...of course it helped that the grocer was selling it for $9.99 a 12 pack...

somebody give me a HELL YEAHHHH!!!

I, too, discovered Whitbread in the 60's (though in England).

If it had become my favourite, I'm sure that I never became an alcoholic Wink

I looked for the Whitbread today, but my grocer doesn't carry it. I settled on Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ... $9.99 for six.

alas tico, the reason my fave beer was so cheap is that my grocer has discontinued ordering it...apparently I was the only one buying it Laughing

let me know about your pale ale

It is very good ... recommended.

But I was wrong about the price, it was only $6.99/6.

Shiner has a special brew out this year only, and damn if it ain't good:

Shiner 100 Commemorator

Quote:
Brewed in the traditional Doppelbock-style, this mildly-spiced, toasted-caramel ale is arguably one of the tawniest lagers around. It is a malt beer brewed for consumption and sometimes dubbed as "liquid bread" since monks developed this style of beer to help them fast during the Lenten season. The Commemorator is as rich and robust as the 100 years of Shiner heritage it represents. Available for a limited time only through the end of 2009. Savor a pint while you can.

Back in Germany, the Doppelbocks tend to be syrupy-sweet -- a flavor I'm not particularly fond of in a beer. But if the Shiner 100 Commemorator is different, I may well give it a try. Is it?

It is slightly sweeter than their bock, but I would not describe it as "sweet", let alone "syrupy-sweet".

picked up the sierra nevada tico and it was very good...also , on a whim, picked up an oil can of a new Fosters called premium ale. Much better than the regular Foster's. Sipped it with chorizo and manchego cheese slices on Goya crackers...good stuff

reporting in on last week's brew:
Got the Sam Adams mixed 12 pack and while the porters(dark) are good the Scotch Ale tastes like the draught lines in the pub hadn't been cleaned in 40 years...
stick to the Boston Ale

There's not enough of it at reasonable prices.
