France opened up it's newest bridge today - the world's highest bridge, taller than the eiffel tower, scary as all get out.

I can't even wrap my brain around this picture, It looks like an artist's rendition.

it's 2.46 kilometres (1.6 miles) long, almost 300 metres (900 feet) tall (at points).

Why'd they do it? Looks like there's already a road that goes down to the valley floor.

Are there rails on the side of the bridge, stopping your car from tumbling over if you move too far? I couldn't see any on the photo

BBC wrote:
Tangled route
Until the bridge was built, traffic on the busy A-75 motorway had to negotiate twisty roads running through the valley near the town of Millau.

At the height of summer these roads quickly became jammed with holiday traffic.

The elegant bridge, designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster, now bypasses Millau and links the two existing sections of motorway.

I didn't realize there was already a thread and I started another one. Have a few engineering links on it...

Littlek, the first photo your posted looks like a painting of a fantasy scene. Lord of the Rings, ethereal, otherworldly, with a destination to a fantastically beautiful magical realm.

It would scare me half to death to drive on that bridge, but I would dearly love to do it and feel that shivery fear---breathless from the beauty.

WOW!!

One nice accident should back that up nicely.
Yup.

I wonder if it's wide enough for an air ambulance to land on.

No, the idea is to just throw the injured off, tying 'em into the parachutes that are supplied at every bridgeupholderthingie, and the ambulances will wait at the bottom.
