This thread is devoted to books on Asian culture and travel in both the Near and Far East.

I'm currently reading Suketu Mehta's Maxium City: Bombay Lost and Found. Mehta is an international Indian with a love for his native land, glories and faults.

Did you know that more people live in Bombay than in all of Australia?

I'm currently reading The River At The Centre Of The World by Simon Winchester which is combination of a diary of a journey up the Yangtze and an exploration of Chinese history. The Chinese innate assumption of their cultural superiority is a little worrying but it is never the less an illuminating read.

You get a very narrow view of history through your average parochial education system. Books make up for that a bit.
