Does Democrat = Socialist?

Pure capitalism is just as destructive as pure socialism. Republicans and right-wingers find the comparison of democrats to socialists very effective campaign blather, but that's about all it is.

Are we so blinded by partisan rage that every other thread (not just on this forum, but all political forums) is about one of the parties' "agenda." Yes, there are socialists in America... they belong to the SOCIALIST party (surprising, eh?).

If you don't agree with certain policies, you should argue against those specific policies. Naked name calling only retards political discourse in this country.

Firstly, I'm a moderate libertarian, so everyone assuming I'm some kind of right wing extremeist didn't read that I also dislike Bush.

And in respose to your comment, the first post in the thread is a list of grievances about socialism acted out through democratic policy (referencing actual laws/movements within the party.)

I am displeased with the two party system, how it eeks out extremeists - especially when the vote is split like this.

Craven - instead of wildy discrediting those you disagree with, maybe you could try forming an educated opinion.

An educated opinion would clearly be: No, Democrat does not equal socialist.

First off, I'm sure that not all Democrats have the same beliefs, just as all Republicans do not share the same beliefs.

But at least in Europe, if a person or political party believes in the Government promising everything to everyone, they're honest about it, and actually call themselves Socialists.

And if Mr. Kerry isn't a Socialist, could someone please tell me what part of the Socialist platform Mr. Kerry disagrees with?

Craven, having no first hand experience living in a socialist state, perhaps some of us don't have the depth of understanding that you claim to own. That doesn't prevent me from seeing Kerry's platform and voting record appear as a socialist agenda.

I never claimed lacking knowledge would prevent you from making an incorect claim.

In fact I claimed quite the opposite.

I am not "wildly discrediting" you. And I have formed an educated opinion.

I'll repeat it for you:

Your usage of "socialism" in this thread has precious little to do with what socialism is, and I lament the corruption of this word in the vocabulary of the average American, who uses the word in ignorance.

From wikipedia.com:

The term Socialism or Socialist can refer to several related things:

An ideology or a group of ideologies.
An economic system.
A state that exists or has existed.
In Marxist theory, the society that would succeed capitalism, and then develop further into communism.
The word dates back at least to the early nineteenth century. It has been used differently in different times and places, both by various individuals and groups that consider themselves socialist and by their opponents. While there is wide variation between socialist groups, nearly all would agree that they are bound together by a common history rooted originally in nineteenth and twentieth-century struggles by industrial and agricultural workers, operating according to principles of solidarity and advocating an egalitarian society, with an economics that would, in their view, serve the broad populace rather than a favored few.

cjhsa,

Why are you quoting something that contradicts you?

It doesn't. It says "The term Socialism or Socialist can refer to several related things: An ideology or a group of ideologies". That supports my claim.

No it does not cjhsa.

They are drawing a distinction between ideological socialism and economic socialism, not necessarily saying that any "ideology" you call socialism is socialism. Laughing
