The last time the Cubbies won, Theodore Roosevelt was the President, and Edward VII was the King of England.

I wanted the Cubs to win, but believed into that tenth inning it would be Cleveland. I think Cleveland thought so too.

@joefromchicago,
It's in the news. I thought you might have some kind of interesting , local, detail to add.

"And the Cubs shall arise to fight the Final Battle between National and American League." Wasn't that supposed to be the Seventh Sign of the Apoalypse? Surely the End must be nigh. In the meantime, congratulations!

Well, the game was stupid late - MLB should have moved up the start time by an hour (like it did with game 2) because of the threat of rain. It didn't, and so there was a rain delay and then the game went into extra innings and that meant that the game didn't end until after midnight. Which is a long way of explaining why most of Chicago was late to work this morning.

The air-raid sirens went off when the Cubs clinched it - not the full-on air-raid drill, though, unlike when the White Sox won the pennant in 1959 and everyone thought the Russkies were about to drop the bomb on us. Acts of mayhem and vandalism were kept to a minimum, so luckily we avoided the kind of destruction usually associated with Vancouver losing the Stanley Cup finals. On the whole, I think it registered a 3.7 on the Canuck-o-meter.

1. And lo, he opened the seventh seal; 2. and the wee bears were proclaimed champions among their brethren; 3. and there was loosed upon the earth a monster of orange hue; 4. who talked of building great walls and who treated the women in his vicinity with much grabbing of the privates; 5. and verily there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth and rending of garments

One of my favourite dixieland bands is that of Ted Butterman (thanks to Joe, who gave me the opportunity to watch them live @ Wrigley) ...

My stupid recorder turned off in the eight so I missed all the good stuff.
Is Madden a hall of fame coach? Is he ever , though I thought he lost his mind when he put in Lester and Ross in the fifth...I mean Hendricks was pitching a mean game..
In the end though, the young guns had seen everything Kluber and Miller could offer and the Cleveland bullpen ran out of gas.

We've got our own celebration going on. We've just beaten Inter Milan. 2-1.

Quote:
Southampton's rapid rise over the past seven seasons might be still fresh in the memory of most football observers, but hosting one of the world's biggest clubs in a competitive European fixture offered a reminder to those who had forgotten.

The fortunes of the two clubs back in the 2009-10 season could not have been more stark.

Inter were being managed by Jose Mourinho, had a star-studded squad led by Javier Zanetti and Samuel Eto'o, and went on to win an unprecedented Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia treble.

Southampton won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. And, after entering administration the previous year, they went on to finish seventh in League One.

No wonder a fervent home crowd of over 30,000 greeted this victory with the sort of elation usually reserved for a trophy-lifting celebration.

@izzythepush,
Q: You're trapped in a room with a Lion, Cobra snake and an Southampton Fan. You have a gun with two bullets. What should you do?
A: Shoot the Saints fan. Twice.
