Those are presumptuous estimates concerning particular parts of the world (mostly Northern America and certain European countries). In addition to that, the information regarding the turn of the century should not apply to you, rather to people born in the 2010's who will live to reach their full stature in the late 20's to early 30's of our century.
Keeping in mind the aforementioned facts, I'll proceed to add a minor key detail most people seemingly dismiss. There does exist a shortening of the male stature following throughout, I would presume, a section of the 80's and 90's which in many countries may result to average stature becoming 1.76 m (strong 5' 9") and low average such - 1.74 m (strong 5' 8") -- in which case your opinion does match your observation.
