December 1982 was when I brought mine home. We had the side pieces wedged in between the seats of my then room-mate's car. I sorta was wedged against the door, as most of my seat, and the rest of the car, was full of shelves.

Went through a lot of Danish oil, preparing them. Those shelves have done yeoman work - fish tanks, tv's, stereos, and literally thousands of books, have lived on them.
