There's an ancient myth which says that when music reaches a certain level of sublimity it is a signal that the end times are approaching. It is as if poets can sense danger like animals can and they communicate a sense of ineffable sadness which serves as a warning and for which we show our gratitude by crucifying them. Or at least the materialist, philistine roundheads do.

Bob Dylan performs at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans April 28, 2006. REUTERS/Lee CelanoReuters LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock icon Bob Dylan will sing the old yuletide standards "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" on his first ever Christmas album, with royalties going to charity, his record label said on Wednesday.

Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart" album is due out on October 13, nearly six months after the release of his last studio album, "Together Through Life," which topped the charts.

Speculation about the Christmas album began surfacing a few months ago, but were initially met with disbelief by some Dylan aficionados, as the singer was not known to record Christmas songs, and his latest albums have featured original material.

Dylan will donate all his U.S. royalties from album sales to the charity group Feeding America, and in a statement he said he hopes it brings "food security to people in need."

Feeding America said it expects to provide meals to 1.4 million people this holiday season with the album proceeds.

Columbia said Dylan plans to donate his international royalties to two charity organizations that give meals to needy people in Britain and the developing world. But details on that partnership are still being worked out.

"Christmas in the Heart" is Dylan's 47th album, and it will include songs like "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Winter Wonderland," "Little Drummer Boy" and "Must Be Santa," said his longtime label, Columbia Records.

Dylan, 68, recently finished a concert tour of minor league ballparks. The singer behind the songs "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," received a Pulitzer Prize last year for his influence on music and culture.

Have you heard about him being a voice on Sat Navs. Imagine Dylan telling you which fork in the road to take. Again!!!

Noontime, an' I'm still pushin' myself along the road, the darkest part,
Ooooohhoo! Into the narrow lanes, I can't stumble or stay put.

It was on the front page of The Daily Telegraph yesterday. With large photo of Bob at the mike. There are not many who can handle a mike as good as Bob can. The 1984 Newcastle I and I was a lesson in the art. I was there. I have a video of it. But it's not on You Tube.

What a concert that was Ed.

When he hit "God said to Abraham kill me a son, to start off the gig, a pair of knickers flew onto the stage.

I have seen Bob several times, beginning in Long Beach, CA, in 1964. I tried to get into the Woody Guthrie memorial concert in New York City, in 1968, but the tickets were immediately sold as the ticket sellers opened for business. Last time was in the Astrodome, here in Houston, at the rodeo.

I have attended about 7 dylan concerts over the years, the worst of them was the "Rolling Thunder' concert in Ft Collins Colorado and the Foxwoods concert in Connecticut. the very best were the Cricket on the Green concerts in Denver Colorado.

The probelm with Rolling Thunder (in the Astrodome), it was too long. We watched Stevie Wonder and a whole raft of performers for hours. By the time Bob came on to sing, my pregnant wife was exhaused and we only stayed long enough to hear one song by him.

I loved his band. I never did check out the musicians' names, but they were great.
