You should really talk to your tutor about this. Getting the answer on a website like this won't help your studies much. It may not even be right, some contributors use appalling English, and others may give you the wrong answer just for the hell of it.

A. Debatable. Better Shar if you delete the "but"
B. Okay
C. Only if context says ie there was something valuable in the house that also got destroyed. Awkward
D. Okay
E. Tough to make this one work by any means

@Shariff,
This is a Compound Sentence with two independent clauses connected by the conjunction "but." In this sentence, the clue is in the verb tense given "managed." So tell me, which came first? The fire? or Them saving their furniture? What verb tense would you use to show the fire came first?

Past Perfect Tense: had destroyed

Or

Present Perfect Tense: has been destroyed

I'll let you decide: [BTW, all the others are wrong]
